Seismic Discontinuities Across the North American Caribbean Plate Boundary From S‐to‐P Receiver Functions

چکیده

The evolution of the Caribbean plate has resulted in formation volcanic arcs, Large Igneous Province (CLIP) and micro-plates across boundary zones. northern with North American been particularly segmented transition from oblique subduction to collision moving east west. However, there are few constraints on seismic structure upper mantle boundary. Here we use S-to-P receiver functions map velocity discontinuities boundary, placing crustal lithospheric thicknesses, as well structures associated collision. We image a increase depth, consistently seen at 28–34 ± 4 km along which corresponds Moho. A second strong depth is observed depths 64–66 5 km, related presence subducting slabs anisotropic effects. decrease 95–135 7 reflects lithosphere-asthenosphere that varies deepest negative discontinuity spatially maps CLIP. suggest deep melting 135 an elevated potential temperature 1585 20°C during CLIP formation, caused depleted dehydrated root base melting, thus thickening lithosphere.

Upper mantle deformation beneath the North American–Pacific plate boundary in California from SKS splitting

[1] In order to constrain the vertical and lateral extent of deformation and the interactions between lithosphere and asthenosphere in a context of a transpressional plate boundary, we performed teleseismic shear wave splitting measurements for 65 permanent and temporary broadband stations in central California. We present evidence for the presence of two anisotropic domains: (1) one with clear...

the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary in the north-west of iran from s receiver function

recently, the s receiver function method has been successfully developed to identify upper mantle interfaces. s receiver functions have the advantage of being free of s-wave multiple reflections and can be more suitable than p receiver function for studying mantle lithosphere. however, because of specific ray geometry of the s-to-p converted waves, the s receiver function method has some techni...

Detection of seismic discontinuities

In seismic images, the opaque oscillatory nature of the ever present sedimentary layers often hide the boundaries between sedimentary packages, such as faults or river channels. Interpreters painstakingly identify these boundaries by inspecting individual planes of the image volume. Discontinuity attribute maps computed from image volumes depict these boundaries and greatly simplify and acceler...

Tide gauge records of uplift along the northern Pacific-North American plate boundary, 1937 to 2001

[1] Vertical crustal motions at 15 sites along the northern Pacific-North America plate boundary are determined using relative sea level changes from tide gauge records. Our analysis is based on monthly mean sea levels, from which barometric pressure and seasonal effects are removed. The records are corrected for common-mode oceanographic variations. These records are statistically examined for...
